Why You Feel Unmotivated (It’s Not Laziness) and How to Reset Your Brain

If you have been feeling unmotivated, stuck, or unable to get yourself to do simple things, it is easy to assume something is wrong with you.

That you are lazy.
That you lack discipline.
That you should be doing more.

But what if none of that is true?

What if your brain is overwhelmed?

In a recent episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast, Dr. Andrew Huberman explains that your brain is constantly evaluating effort versus reward. When your nervous system is overloaded, everything starts to feel like too much effort. Even small tasks can feel impossible.

This is not a character flaw.
It is a nervous system response.

When you are dealing with anxiety, coming out of depression, or recovering from a hard season like postpartum struggles, your brain shifts into protection mode.

That can look like:

No motivation
No focus
Avoidance
Feeling frozen or stuck

According to research in neuroscience and psychology, this is tied to how the brain regulates dopamine, which plays a key role in motivation and goal-directed behavior. When dopamine levels feel low, even things you want to do can feel overwhelming.

So instead of asking, “Why can’t I do this?” try asking a different question.

What is the smallest version of this I can do?

Lowering the barrier is what allows your brain to re-engage.

Try this:

Do the task for two minutes
Stand up and change your environment
Take one slow breath in and out
Write down the next smallest step, not the whole plan

You do not need motivation to start.

You need a starting point.

This is something I had to learn the hard way through anxiety, postpartum depression, and seasons where even getting through the day felt heavy. The shift was not forcing myself to do more. It was learning how to start smaller.

Action creates motivation. Not the other way around.

Even one small step tells your brain that it is safe to move forward again.
